Do you need separate watch insurance?

Standard homeowners and renters policies cover personal property, but they usually set a low limit for jewelry and watches – often $1,500 to $2,500 in total for theft – and they may not cover loss (for example a watch slipping off at the beach) or accidental damage at all. If your watches are worth more than that, you have two main options: add a scheduled personal property rider to your home policy, or buy a specialist jewelry and watch policy.

    Scheduled rider vs specialist policy

A rider lists each watch with its appraised value and usually extends coverage to loss and worldwide theft. Specialist insurers focus on valuables and often offer broader cover: mysterious disappearance, no deductible options, replacement with the same model at current prices, and choice of repairer. Claims on a specialist policy also don't affect your home insurance record.

    What affects your premium

    FactorEffect
ValueThe main driver – premiums are a percentage of insured value
LocationLarge cities and high-crime postcodes pay more
StorageA bolted safe or bank vault lowers the rate
Wear and travelDaily wear and frequent travel raise the risk of loss and theft
DeductibleA higher deductible lowers the premium
Claims historyRecent claims can raise rates significantly

    Getting the value right

Insure at replacement value – what it would cost to buy the same watch today – not what you paid years ago. For high-demand models the secondary-market price may be well above retail, so check what your policy pays: the retail price, an agreed value, or the cost of a replacement. Professional appraisals are recommended for valuable pieces and should be updated every two to three years.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to insure a watch?

Typically around 1 – 2 % of the watch's value per year. A $10,000 watch might cost about $100 – $200 per year to insure.

Does home insurance cover my watch?

Usually only up to a low limit for jewelry and watches, often $1,500 – $2,500 for theft. Valuable watches should be scheduled or insured separately.

Should I insure my watch for what I paid?

Insure for replacement value – the cost to replace it today – and update the valuation regularly.

    Does watch insurance cover loss?

Specialist policies and scheduled riders usually cover loss and mysterious disappearance; basic home policies often don't.

Do I need an appraisal to insure a watch?

For high-value watches most insurers ask for a recent receipt or appraisal. It also helps you get paid correctly after a claim.

    About CaseCover

CaseCover is an independent, free estimator for insuring watches and watch collections. Premiums are illustrative ranges based on typical published rates; actual quotes depend on the insurer, your location and personal circumstances. Every formula on this page runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, stored or shared. Our goal is simple: give you an honest starting point so you can compare product specifications with confidence and avoid paying for capacity you do not need – or buying something too small to do the job.

The methodology combines widely published engineering rules of thumb, manufacturer data sheets and the electrical code practices that installers use every day. We review the assumptions regularly and update the calculator when typical product specifications change.
